A spirometer is a device that assesses your lung function. It measures the amount and speed of air expelled from your lungs.

Peak flow measurement is a procedure that records the amount of air flowing out of your lungs. Peak flow can be measured with either a spirometer or a peak flow meter.

Oximetry is a procedure used to measure the oxygen level—or oxygen saturation—in the blood.

When making a diagnosis of asthma, your health care provider will look at these symptoms and factors, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute:

  • Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or chest tightness that occurs suddenly and frequently

  • Colds that linger for more than 10 days

  • Medicines you have used to help you breather more easily

  • Things in your environment that make your symptoms worse

  • A family history of allergies or asthma
